And once again, it looked like I dropped everything and dashed off on a whirlwind of activities.

To be honest though, I have no excuse to offer for the past 2 weeks of inactivity, but I do have an excuse for the inactivity before that. And the excuse is that -drumroll- I graduated! I am officially a University of Michigan alumni after 3 years of snow and occasionally some sunshine.

The ceremony was wild because President Obama, yes, that’s right, THE President of the US of A was the Commencement speaker. Regardless of mine, his, and your political views, it was a pretty darn exciting. I was only five rows of chairs away from him and my friend joked about how he could probably spit and sweat on us with a good wind.

And, speaking of wind, the weather that morning was terrible. My parents and friends had fought their way into the Michigan Football Stadium at around 6 in the morning and I had also been at the field at around 6 in the morning–all to get close-up seats. I think everyone thought it was worth it though. After all, how often do you get to see a sitting president up close?

After the graduation ceremony, my parents and I flew to NYC to visit my grandmother. And I think we can all agree that NYC=good food. I hadn’t had such good Chinese food for so long…so this post will be me going on and on about xiao long bao, or the Shanghai-nese soup bun at Joe’s Shanghai, a restaurant in Flushing, and some other random good food that my aunt took us to.

This is veryyyy old, but I have a random bento!

Bento are so easy to make and make pretty! I think half the time, people make bentos just for the fun of decorating and then enjoying some food.

I can’t believe I forgot to post these!

These little crabs (the body of the crab is about the size of a penny) were from Pacific Mall in Toronto. My cousin got these for me as a snack since I told her that Ann Arbor was, in many ways, like a “village”.

It’s just a cute little snack that are incredibly…exotic, for lack of a better term.

Hi everyone!

Again, it seems like I was swept away by school. It’s been an incredibly crazy past month or so, and I really feel irresponsible when I can’t update as much as I can. I’ve gotten a job recently with the University, so I’m a full time student plus a staff member for the school!

But, because I’m a student, that also means we get…that’s right! Spring Break!

This break couldn’t have come at a better time since I’d been scrambling with papers due the entire week before. For Spring Break, my roommates and some friends of ours took a road trip to Toronto. It’s about a five hour drive from Ann Arbor and pretty much the opposite direction of Chicago. I think in terms of culture…well, in my opinion, there wasn’t much of a difference. Toronto, though, is probably about the food.

So our first stop was at Hachitarou (photo from Yelp by Jennifer K.)

I spent my Xmas day in Chicago, and wow, it was a little creepy since the downtown area so almost entirely empty.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a taste of Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza, but my friend and I went to a fairly famous restaurant called Joy Yee’s in Chinatown.

It feels like a lot of people are trying to scrape by until Thanksgiving break here in the States, and I’m one of them. Motivation just isn’t the “in” thing right now.

Sometimes I try to have tea to wake myself up/get a boost of energy, and recently, my friend Angel gave me a tea strainer that’s perfect for an individual person and gives me something fun to look at while I’m working.

So I had a friend staying the night and I told her I’d make dinner for her and one of my roommates, Maggie. When I asked the visiting friend, Mikuni, what she’d like for dinner, she replied with “Asian food!” and, surprise surprise!, I made Asian (style) food.

I’ve tried these pork wraps before, and they aren’t particularly difficult except for when you’re actually combining everything together into the final piece. My previous attempt also included cooking everything all at once together, but I’ve learned my lesson…that isn’t that easy and it’s just darn difficult!

Luckily, I’ve learned from my mistakes, and here is now an easier-to-make and maybe even tastier version of the wraps from the past (hey it rhymes!…kind of)

This is my version of a  frozen computer (because I don’t have a TV) dinner.

Unlike most of the food I have here in the blog, this wasn’t made by me (except the steamed vegetables). This is made, with love, from my parents back in California before I came back here in the beginning of September for school.

So once in awhile, when I’m at home, my dad makes congee, or porridge. He says it’s to detoxify our system, although how well it actually works depends on the person, I suppose. We normally have it with only white rice and side dishes from his home village, Shantou, China. Unfortunately, though, I only have it here with random side dishes picked up from the local Asian supermarket.

This multi-grain congee though, sometimes has enough of flavor by itself, so if you choose to, you could probably have it plain. It’s got a very…well, grainy flavor. It’s not something that’s a medley of flavors, but has a clean and natural taste, and it’s good if you’re just tired of eating out.  It’s also incredibly easy and you can multitask at the same time while preparing and cooking the dish. As usual, more behind the jump.

So it isn’t really sashimi in the real sense, but it’s raw silken tofu, and who doesn’t love that smooth silky texture with its refreshing soy taste?

This dish is excellent for summers, but I’m having it in the coolness of spring, and I still love it. It’s also very fast and the ingredients are easy to obtain and put together and is normally enough to serve as a meal in and of itself.

More silken goodness beneath the jump~!
