And once again, it looked like I dropped everything and dashed off on a whirlwind of activities.

To be honest though, I have no excuse to offer for the past 2 weeks of inactivity, but I do have an excuse for the inactivity before that. And the excuse is that -drumroll- I graduated! I am officially a University of Michigan alumni after 3 years of snow and occasionally some sunshine.

The ceremony was wild because President Obama, yes, that’s right, THE President of the US of A was the Commencement speaker. Regardless of mine, his, and your political views, it was a pretty darn exciting. I was only five rows of chairs away from him and my friend joked about how he could probably spit and sweat on us with a good wind.

And, speaking of wind, the weather that morning was terrible. My parents and friends had fought their way into the Michigan Football Stadium at around 6 in the morning and I had also been at the field at around 6 in the morning–all to get close-up seats. I think everyone thought it was worth it though. After all, how often do you get to see a sitting president up close?

After the graduation ceremony, my parents and I flew to NYC to visit my grandmother. And I think we can all agree that NYC=good food. I hadn’t had such good Chinese food for so long…so this post will be me going on and on about xiao long bao, or the Shanghai-nese soup bun at Joe’s Shanghai, a restaurant in Flushing, and some other random good food that my aunt took us to.

I haven’t had much time or ingredients to cook lately, which is why I’m posting so much about restaurants I went to.

Today we went to Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger. I was really craving some greasy diner food lately, so this was our pick!  I was really excited to come here since I was told that it was featured on the Food Network, so I was expecting a very good burger.

I wasn’t disappointed! Blimpy Burger sort of gives off the “hole in the wall” restaurant type of vibe. The price is also pretty reasonable. It was about $5 for a burger with fries.

This past week (01.17-01.22) was “Restaurant Week” where we are. Basically, a lot of the restaurants downtown (which are normally priced higher than a student’s budget) offer meals for a little cheaper than normal.

A lot of places offer lunch for $12, and some places had a “2 for 1” deal.  My friends and I went to “Blue Nile“, an Ethiopian restaurant that had the “2 for 1” deal. It was a competition between Seva’s, a vegetarian/vegan place, and Blue Nile, and honestly, I’m glad Blue Nile won out.

The staff were very friendly. Being the camera foodie that I am, I asked if we could move to a seat by the window so I could get better shots of the food. The host immediately said, “Sure, sure! That’s no problem at all!”

On the 2-for-1 $12 menu, there were four items. My roommates, friend, and I ended up getting two different dishes, the ZilZil Wat and Yedoro Tibs, with different vegetable sides as well as a cup of spiced Ethiopian tea. Our tea arrived first.

My apologies for the long long absence! Once again, school was frying up my life as I scrambled to get everything under control and find some time to sleep as well. It also didn’t help that my computer was broken for about a week over New Year’s (when I actually had time to post…) But everything’s slowed down (just a teeny bit) and fixed so I can post about my experiment today!

There is a small chain of restaurants here on my campus called “No Thai!” I normally go there when I’m craving some nice “Asian” noodles. Asian in the sense that it’s Asian American, kind of like how “chow mein” is Asian (aka, not really Asian).

About two weeks ago, I went to No Thai and ordered Pad Thai since I had gotten the “Drunken Noodles” last time. I wasn’t particularly impressed, but then again, what could I expect from a chain semi-fast food store?

So, today, I thought I’d give my own (inauthentic, probably) version of Pad Thai a try. I was craving for something that reminded me that sunny snow-less places still exist somewhere out there.

I used this recipe from Thai Table and modified it for myself.

When you tell people that you’re a college student, the first few images that come to mind are probably:

1. Beer

2. Instant Noodles

3. More Instant Noodles

4. Caffeine

For some reason, it seems to be a little difficult for people to believe that college students can cook real food. It might be even harder to believe that college students can cook well.

Well, I proudly prove these beliefs wrong with my discovery of Wolverine CuiZine.

Wolverine CuiZine is a newly opened food-related blog/webzine/magazine that opened at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (aka, my Uni). The blog is manned by students who, like you and I, love food. I discovered the blog one day when I was walking out of a computer lab and actually paused to write the contact information down on my arm in pen!

CuiZine covers a variety of topics and doesn’t focus on cooking only. The blog team also covers various food-related events on, or close to, campus, such as the Ann Arbor farmer market, as well as restaurant reviews and segments on eating healthy.

Despite it being a fledgling club/blog, CuiZine welcomes everyone as long as they like food. Even though I had only just contacted the editors of the blog, I was immediately and warmly invited to a potluck CuiZine was hosting on  campus.

For you parents with children in University or college, CuiZine just goes to show that Instant Noodles aren’t the only method of surviving. With reader-friendly posts, Wolverine CuiZine offers “College Food 101” to all those who visit its pages.

*Warning* Picture heavy! My browser actually froze a couple times while I was writing this.This is probably because I just can’t decide what looks most delicious…

Although most of these posts are probably going to be about me making something, there will also be moments when I talk about food I ate, and yesterday was very food heavy.

As with any “祭” or “fesitval” there will be food and performances, and the JCF was no exception. There were activities for all ages (although I think the older people probably focused more on the food). There were musical performances by local bands and performers, which included “Miyabi” a local group of artists that play traditional Japanese instruments, such as the koto and shamisen. The Kendo Club was also featured, although I didn’t participate even though I’m a part of it (-goes and hides-).
